We are delighted to announce the runner-up of the Children 5-10 Category in this year's Bury St Edmunds Literature Festival Creative Writing Competition.
RUNNER-UP - Finn Wolfarth Shea Age 6
Castle Newnham School
Statement from Finn’s Mum:
"Finn enjoys coming up with silly and surreal stories but he is especially happy that he made the judges laugh out loud with this story!"
Peggy Hughes, judge of 5-10 category says:
“Like the best short stories, this short, surreal little piece raised more questions than it gave answers. Why is there a frog on a dog on a hog on a log on the doorstep? How come there's a lion roaring on the lawn? There's so much being implied beneath the surface! The fact that the polar bear 'thought he had hidden himself very well, but he hadn’t' made me laugh out loud, and yet the whole tense little story, just 154 words, gave me chills in the way that the best Roald Dahl can. “
The Unwanted Guests
by Finn Wolfarth Shea Age 6
One rainy lunchtime there was a knock at the front door. I went to answer the door thinking it might be the postman.
But it was not the postman.
On the doorstep there was a frog on a dog on a hog on a log.
It had rolled to my front door.
I was so confused!
So I quickly shut the door again. I ran to the back door and out into the garden.
In the back garden I immediately spotted a polar bear in the bushes. He thought he had hidden himself very well, but he hadn’t.
I did not know what to do!
So I ran and jumped over the wall, then I thought I might be safe.
But I was not.
In my neighbour's garden there was a lion roaring at me on the lawn.
I ran all the way to the park. There was nothing weird there, so I stayed.
The end.
Huge congratulations to Finn. We are looking forward to seeing you at the festival and giving you your goody bag full of bookish treats.
