Meet The Author: 5 minutes with Catherine Emmett

We are delighted to have three times as many events for children at this year’s Bury St Edmunds Literature Festival - one of our core aims is to provide a programme that provides something for every reader, no matter their age. One of the events we are particularly excited about is with children's author Catherine Emmett at 10.30am on Saturday 12th October at the Unitarian Meeting house. Catherine's event will be suitable for the very youngest of readers, and even those who cannot yet read, as it will be a celebration of storytelling and her two most recent picture books.

We took 5 minutes to sit down with Catherine to find out something about her in advance of her event at the festival

Childhood Influences and Literary Heroes

Catherine Emmett, the acclaimed children's author, credits her early fascination with storytelling to the vibrant voices that filled her head as a child. Growing up, she was surrounded by an array of influences that spurred her creativity and love for literature. While she didn't single out specific heroes, it's clear that her imaginative upbringing played a crucial role in shaping her writing journey.

The Spark of Writing

What first ignited Catherine's passion for writing? According to her, it was the multitude of voices clamoring for attention in her mind. Writing became an outlet to bring these characters to life and share their stories with the world. This intrinsic motivation has driven her to create engaging and imaginative tales that resonate with young readers.

Books at Bury St Edmunds Literature Festival

At this year's Bury St Edmunds Literature Festival, Catherine Emmett will be discussing two of her latest books:

  • The Rainbow Flamingo: A vibrant and colorful story that encourages children to embrace and be proud of their unique feathers.

  • Trick or Treat?: A twisty Halloween tale that reminds readers that appearances can be deceiving and that everyone isn't always who they seem.

Excitement for the Festival

Catherine is particularly enthusiastic about interacting with children at the festival. She finds joy in making up stories on the spot and discussing books with fearless young minds whose imaginations never cease to amaze her.

Current Reads and Recommendations

Currently, Catherine is diving into a book by Lisa Jewel, known for her absorbing narratives. She has also been enjoying some non-fiction works and a series about King Midas, showcasing her diverse reading interests.

A Fun Fact About Catherine

In a surprising revelation, Catherine shared a quirky anecdote from her childhood: "My sister ironed my fingers when I was a 1-year-old!" This playful glimpse into her past adds a personal touch to her inspiring story.
