Janice Hallett, known for her compelling and intricate storytelling, will be appearing at this year’s Bury St Edmunds Literature Festival on Sunday 13th October 2024 at 3pm at The Guildhall, Bury St Edmunds.
In advance of her appearance we took 5 minutes to sit down with Janice and ask her a few questions about her journey to writing and what she’s looking forward to about appearing at the festival.
Literary Influences and Inspirations
When asked about what initially sparked her interest in writing, Hallett's response reflected a deep-seated love for narratives that explore complex human relationships and emotions. Her literary heroes growing up have clearly left a lasting impression on her storytelling style, including the adventurous characters from Enid Blyton's The Famous Five and The Secret Seven and the spirited characters in pony books from the 50s and 60s.
The Examiner
At the festival, Hallett will be discussing her latest book, "The Examiner". This novel presents a stark contrast to the typically positive portrayal of teamwork. It delves into the dynamics of a claustrophobic group whose relationships simmer with tension beneath a veneer of calm. The story explores themes of accountability and the consequences of collective responsibility in a gripping narrative.
Festival Highlights
Hallett is looking forward to discussing a range of topics at the festival, from reading and writing. She comes well-prepared with recommendations, such as "Hidden Pictures" by Jason Rekulak, a novel she found refreshingly unique.
A Personal Connection to Suffolk
Adding a personal touch, Hallett shared a fascinating tidbit about her family history. Her paternal grandmother hailed from Suffolk and worked at Henham Hall. Her great-uncles are honored on the Wangford war memorial, deepening her connection to the region.
