Meet the author: 5 minutes with Jill Dawson.

Ever wondered about the life of an author? How they began their journey, what inspires them, and what they’re reading now? Let’s dive into the fascinating world of Jill Dawson, the acclaimed author in advance of her appearance at this year’s Bury St Edmunds Literature Festival 2024 at 4.30pm on Sunday 13th October at the Unitarian Meeting House, Bury St Edmunds.

From Solitary Childhood to Literary Dreamer

Jill Dawson’s childhood was anything but ordinary. Growing up, she was a solitary child, immersed deeply in a make-believe world. Her heroes weren’t the usual celebrities or historical figures; instead, they were characters from novels. One such character was the protagonist from "Little House on the Prairie." Interestingly, Jill even lived in a log cabin in America for a year, an experience that inspired her first novel.

Early Sparks of Writing

Jill’s passion for writing ignited at a very young age. By the age of nine, she had already penned her first little book. This early start set the foundation for her writing career, showcasing her innate talent and love for storytelling.

The Bewitching: A Tale of Historical Intrigue

At the Bury St Edmunds Literature Festival, Jill will be discussing her novel "The Bewitching." This captivating book delves into the true story of the witches of Warboys, set in 16th century Huntingdonshire. It revolves around a group of girls who experience mysterious fits and illnesses, leading them to accuse their neighbor of witchcraft, with dire consequences. Jill describes it as a "Me Too story for the sixteenth century," drawing parallels between historical and contemporary issues.

A Love for Suffolk

Jill has a special connection to Suffolk, having set many of her books there and living in the area. She cherishes the local bookshops and is excited to meet readers at the festival.

What’s on Jill’s Reading List?

Curious about what an author reads? Jill’s current reading list includes books about modern witchcraft, specifically "Wicca" by Vivianne Crowley. Additionally, she’s enjoying "Strong Female Character" by Fern Brady, a compelling book about being an autistic woman.

More Than Just an Author

Did you know Jill is also a qualified yoga teacher and tarot reader? She even once read tarot cards for the renowned author Kate Moss!
