Phoebe Morgan, the acclaimed author behind the gripping new thriller 'The Trip,' is set to feature at this year's Bury St Edmunds Literature Festival in our The Suspense is Killing us thriller fiction panel event where Phoebe will be in conversation with JM Hewitt at 1.30pm on Sunday 13th October 2024 at the Unitarian Meeting House, Bury St Edmunds.
We caught up with her to discuss her influences, writing journey, and what fans can expect from her latest work.
Literary Heroes and Early Influences
Growing up, Phoebe drew inspiration from renowned authors like Jacqueline Wilson, Maggie O'Farrell, and Liane Moriarty. However, her childhood played a significant role in shaping her passion for storytelling. Without a TV at home, Phoebe spent countless hours in the local libraries of Suffolk, her imagination fueled by the endless worlds within books.
"I always had my head in a book and I loved writing stories at school and with my grandma when I was little," she recalls. This early immersion in literature laid the foundation for her future career as a writer and her career in publishing.
The Journey to Becoming a Writer
Phoebe's path to becoming an author is a testament to her dedication and love for writing. Apart from her own writing, she also works as a publishing director, collaborating with other authors and bringing their stories to life. This dual role in the literary world gives her a unique perspective and insight into the industry.
'The Trip': A Tale of Secrets and Suspense
At the Bury St Edmunds Literature Festival, Phoebe will be discussing her latest novel, 'The Trip.' Set against the vibrant backdrop of Thailand, the thriller follows four friends—two couples—on a seemingly idyllic holiday to Bangkok. However, each character harbours a secret, one of which has the power to unravel everything.
The book delves into themes of friendship tensions, class disparities, and domestic abuse, making it a compelling and thought-provoking read. Fans of the genre can expect a story rich in suspense and emotional depth.
Returning to Bury St Edmunds
For Phoebe, speaking at the Bury St Edmunds Literature Festival is not just a professional engagement—it's a homecoming. "I grew up nearby so it will be lovely to be back!" she shares. This personal connection adds an extra layer of excitement to her participation in the festival.
Current Reads and Recommendations
When she's not writing or working, Phoebe is an avid reader. She recently enjoyed Lisa Jewell's 'None of This Is True' and Claire Powell's 'At The Table,' both of which come highly recommended.
