Bury Lit Fest's Creative Writing Competition 2024

Updated: Apr 27

It has always been the aim that the festival should not only be a celebration of books and authors, but also be a tool for making connections within the local community and encouraging the craft of writing and the enjoyment of reading for all ages. Hence our reconfigured tag line in 2023: Celebrating books and writing in the heart of East Anglia.

For the past two years we have run a Short Story Competition which has been part of our work towards these core aims, but this year - as we look to expand our offering to children and young people and foster stronger links with local schools and other educational institutions - we have formulated what we hope will be a more exciting and engaging challenge for all age groups.

So this year we invite writers of all ages and experiences to enter:

For our new and improved Creative Writing Competition we will welcome all forms of creative writing be it short story, micro fiction, play, haiku, poem, tv script or radio play or even song!

Entries must be 800 words or less and inspired by the phrase ‘Beyond My Front Door’. Other than that, they are limited only by the author’s imagination.

Categories for entry

Children 5-10 (free entry), Children 11-13 (free entry), Young People 14-17 (free entry), Adults 18+ (£5 entry fee)

This year we are delighted to be offering some incredible prizes with a combined value of over £800!

  • An author school visit & event from Bestselling & Award Winning Authors (tba!) for the two lucky winners of the Children’s categories.

  • A Golden Ticket for access to all the events at this year's Bury Lit Fest for the lucky winners of the Young Adult and Adult categories.

All entries must have been received digitally* and entrance fees paid (where applicable) by midnight on 28 July 2024.

All entries must be made digitally using the forms on the Bury Lit Fest website.

*Schools & teachers wishing to submit their students' work in bulk should contact the Creative Writing Team.

Get writing & good luck!
